Future home of Mitchelville Freedom Park
During the Civil War, escaped slaves sought refuge on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In 1861, Union troops successfully occupied the island and began reconstruction. The area became the first town to be set up for freedmen in the U.S. It was also the first town to offer compulsory education for African Americans in South Carolina.
Today, the area is being redeveloped into a beach community. The new homes are exquisitely designed, and will be passed down from generation to generation. They will be an exciting addition to the Island.
